Video: BlackBerry PlayBook Preview

Want to get a quick glimpse of the BlackBerry PlayBook? Research In Motion has pushed out a nice promotional video showing the QNX operating system and some of the features you'll find on the PlayBook tablet. Hit the break for the video.

So what do you think? We're definitely psyched about the PlayBook tablet and believe it will be a great contender in the tablet market!

RIM Announces the BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet

What many thought would not be announced at BlackBerry DevCon 2010 actually has! The BlackBerry PlayBook tablet has been officially announced with features that will make you drool.

San Francisco, CA – BlackBerry DEVCON 2010 - Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today redefined the possibilities for mobile computing with the unveiling of its new professional-grade BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet and BlackBerry® Tablet OS.

Perfect for either large organizations or an “army of one”, the BlackBerry PlayBook is designed to give users what they want, including uncompromised web browsing, true multitasking and high performance multimedia, while also providing advanced security features, out-of-the-box enterprise support and a breakthrough development platform for IT departments and developers. The incredibly powerful and innovative BlackBerry PlayBook is truly a game-changing product in the growing tablet marketplace.

“RIM set out to engineer the best professional-grade tablet in the industry with cutting-edge hardware features and one of the world's most robust and flexible operating systems,” said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion. “The BlackBerry PlayBook solidly hits the mark with industry leading power, true multitasking, uncompromised web browsing and high performance multimedia.”

The Tablet You'll Want to Take Everywhere
This beautifully designed and incredibly powerful tablet is ultra portable, ultra thin and super convenient for both work and play. Measuring less than half an inch thick and weighing less than a pound, the BlackBerry PlayBook features a vivid 7” high resolution display that looks and feels great in your hand. With such a unique mix of utility, performance and portability, you’ll want to take it everywhere.

The New Benchmark in Tablet Performance
At its heart, the BlackBerry PlayBook is a multitasking powerhouse. Its groundbreaking performance is jointly fueled by a 1 GHz dual-core processor and the new BlackBerry Tablet OS which supports true symmetric multiprocessing. Together, the abundant processing power and highly sophisticated OS enable the BlackBerry PlayBook to provide users with true multitasking and a highly-responsive and fluid touch screen experience for apps and content services.

Uncompromised Web Browsing
With support for Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1, Adobe® Mobile AIR® and HTML-5, the BlackBerry PlayBook provides customers with an uncompromised, high-fidelity web experience and offers them the ability to enjoy all of the sites, games and media on the web. For more than a decade, the mobile industry has worked to bridge the gap between the “real web” and mobile devices through various apps and technologies and, in fact, a significant number of mobile apps today still simply serve as a proxy for web content that already exists on the web. The BlackBerry PlayBook closes that gap and brings the real, full web experience to mobile users while also opening new and more exciting opportunities for developers and content publishers.

High Performance Multimedia
The BlackBerry PlayBook features premium multimedia features to support high-quality mobile experiences. It includes dual HD cameras for video capture and video conferencing that can both record HD video at the same time, and an HDMI-out port for presenting one's creations on external displays. The BlackBerry PlayBook also offers rich stereo sound and a media player that rivals the best in the industry.

BlackBerry Integration
For those BlackBerry PlayBook users who carry a BlackBerry smartphone*, it will also be possible to pair their tablet and smartphone using a secure Bluetooth® connection. This means they can opt to use the larger tablet display to seamlessly and securely view any of the email, BBM™, calendar, tasks, documents and other content that resides on (or is accessible through) their smartphone. They can also use their tablet and smartphone interchangeably without worrying about syncing or duplicating data. This secure integration of BlackBerry tablets and smartphones is a particularly useful feature for those business users who want to leave their laptop behind.

Enterprise Ready
Thanks to the seamless and secure Bluetooth pairing experience and the highly secure underlying OS architecture, the BlackBerry PlayBook is enterprise ready and compatible (out-of-the-box) with BlackBerry® Enterprise Server. When connected over Bluetooth, the smartphone content is viewable on the tablet, but the content actually remains stored on the BlackBerry smartphone and is only temporarily cached on the tablet (and subject to IT policy controls). With this approach to information security, IT departments can deploy the BlackBerry PlayBook to employees out-of-the-box without worrying about all the security and manageability issues that arise when corporate data is stored on yet another device.

QNX Neutrino Reliability
The BlackBerry Tablet OS is built upon the QNX® Neutrino® microkernel architecture, one of the most reliable, secure and robust operating system architectures in the world. Neutrino has been field hardened for years and is being used to support mission-critical applications in everything from planes, trains and automobiles to medical equipment and the largest core routers that run the Internet. The new BlackBerry Tablet OS leverages and builds upon the many proven strengths of this QNX Neutrino architecture to support a professional grade tablet experience and to redefine the possibilities for mobile computing.

An OS Built for Developers
The Neutrino based microkernel architecture in the BlackBerry Tablet OS delivers exceptional performance, high scalability, Common Criteria EAL 4+ security, and support for industry standard tools that are already familiar to hundreds of thousands of developers. The OS is fully POSIX compliant enabling easy portability of C-based code, supports Open GL for 2D and 3D graphics intensive applications like gaming, and will run applications built in Adobe Mobile AIR as well as the new BlackBerry® WebWorks™ app platform announced today (which will allow apps to be written to run on BlackBerry PlayBook tablets as well as BlackBerry smartphones with BlackBerry® 6). The BlackBerry Tablet OS will also support Java enabling developers to easily bring their existing BlackBerry 6 Java applications to the BlackBerry Tablet OS environment.

BlackBerry Storm 9570 Gets a Closer Look

From what you can see the upcoming BlackBerry Storm 9570 will definitely look identical to the current Storm2 9520/9550 form factor. Like the Bold 9780, the BlackBerry Storm 9570 will merely receive internal upgrades so that it can efficiently handle OS 6.

The main reason that the original Storm2 won't receive OS 6 is primarily due to the touchscreen sucking up too much memory with OS 6. The base 256mb RAM on the Storm2 simply wasn't strong enough. Therefore, the refresh model (9570) was necessary to get a Storm device that could run OS 6.

The Storm 9570 will not be thinner than the original Storm2. Literally, just about everything about the 9570 will be the same as the Storm2, even down to the battery. The battery on the Storm 9570 will still be the DX-1. Any current or past Storm2 owners know that the battery life isn't great. We're hoping that with upgraded memory, processor, and OS 6 that the battery life will be better, considering RIM left in the same old battery.

BlackBerry Bold 9780 hands on!

Our friendly FedEx guy just dropped off a present for us — the BlackBerry Bold 9780, replacing the Bold 9700 sometime in the next month or so. As far as the physical changes, well, the device features a glossy jet black bezel, with everything else outside staying the same. We leaked an internal document highlighting the changes in the Bold 9780, and we can confirm that the device seems to be using an updated CPU, even if the clock speed is around 624MHz. The phone boots up very fast, even faster than our regular 9700 with OS 6. The 512MB of RAM in the handset leaves around 300MB free at device start up, and like we said before, OS 6 really works great on a non-touch device overall. We have a boot up comparison video of the current BlackBerry Bold 9700 with the upcoming BlackBerry Bold 9780 side by side as well as photos if you want to get your viewing on. It’s all past the break, folks!

Rogers Getting the BlackBerry Bold 9780 in Mid-November?

?

We have seen evidence that which supports rumors of the BlackBerry Bold 9780 hitting T-Mobile, AT&T, and even Vodafone UK. Now there is rumor that the 9780 may be making its way to Rogers of Canada in Mid-November.

We've seen evidence that the Bold 9780 can run on Rogers, according to the image above. It will be interesting to see if Rogers will delay its release date for the 9780 and let U.S.A. carriers launch it first.

In case you are unfamiliar with the 9780, it is a 'refresh' of the Bold 9700. The new 9780 will sport OS 6, 512mb RAM, 5MP camera, and 624Mhz processor.

Leaked: BlackBerry Torch 9800 OS 6.0.0.214

?

Did you just recently purchase the new BlackBerry Torch 9800 and looking to upgrade its OS again? The last leaked OS was v6.0.0.161, which had many bugs. Luckily, OS v6.0.0.214 has dropped, which is a decent step up from the latter. We aren't sure what is new, but hopefully it has addressed many of the bugs.

BlackBerry Bold 9780

Curve 8980 'Atlas' Spotted with China Mobile Branding

?

The latest and greatest BlackBerry devices haven't yet made their way to the mainland Chinese market. However, it appears that China Mobile will soon be getting a Curve/Bold hybrid with the release of the second 'Atlas'.

Recently, China Mobile launched the Curve 8910, which was basically a Curve 8900 and still sport the trackball. We aren't sure how the sales were for the 8910, but China Mobile users are soon to get a decent upgrade with the Curve 8980.

The Curve 8980 is essentially a Bold 9700 with a Curve keyboard and a plastic battery rather than leather. The Curve 8980 should have similar specs of the Bold 9700 with 624Mhz processor, 3,2MP camera, and 256mb RAM. The Curve 8980 will also be China Mobile's first device with a trackpad. The Curve 8980 will not be a 3G enabled device, but it will support WiFi.

BlackBerry 6 for BlackBerry Bold 9700 video walkthrough

Since the announcement of the BlackBerry Torch 9800 with BlackBerry 6, we've all been waiting to see how older devices such as the BlackBerry Bold 9700 were going to fair with it running. As it turns out, it looks to be in great shape judging from the above video. With a noted boot time of about 1 minute and overall snappy response from the device, BlackBerry 6 on the BlackBerry Bold 9700 looks like it will be worth the wait. Also noted was the fact it appears to be a full implementation of BlackBerry 6 as well. Not a "watered down" release as previously rumored. WebKit browser, universal search and more are all found on the device. What do you all think now that we get a chance to see it running? Looking good or would ya rather a Torch still?

Leaked training slides show off internal overview of BlackBerry Bold 9780

BlackBerry Bold 9780

Looking to get some more details on the BlackBerry Bold 9780? BoyGenius has just unleashed a bevy of training slides from Research In Motion which show off the specs and even how the company views the device from a marketing standpoint. Not much really new, that we didn't already know in the documents when it comes to specifications but the insight as to how RIM views the device is rather interesting to see.

Personally, I love my BlackBerry Bold 9700 and really am excited to see the minor changes that will be arriving when the BlackBerry Bold 9780 launches. Although, that 624mHz Marvell processor feels like it should have gotten a bump. How do you all feel about the 9780? Is it enough to make you want to purchase one or would you have liked to see more changed?
