Leaked: BlackBerry Torch 9800 Slider OS 6.0.0.135!

?

Ok, ok, we know that hardly any of you will be able to use this, unless you have a 9800. However, this is the first full OS 6.0 to be leaked. This is OS 6.0.0.135 for the upcoming BlackBerry Torch 9800 Slider and it could be used to build some great hybrids.

There are new apps (facebook, aim, etc) within the java of this OS. However, we are unsure if you must be on an OS 6 platform to use them. Perhaps the hybrid builders will sort this out.

Download OS 6.0.0.135 from:

BlackBerry 8980 Atlas Being Tested on China Mobile

?

There had been reports that the BlackBerry 'Atlas' would eventually go to Asian markets. It now seems that the 8980 will be hitting China Mobile and only on an EDGE network.

We aren't sure why the 8980 will only be an EDGE device or if it will even be Evolved-EDGE. It also seems as though this device will never see OS 6. Although, it is nice to see that the Chinese will receive a BlackBerry with a trackpad, and not the terribly stripped down 8910 with trackball they received earlier this year.

If you are on China Mobile, are you looking forward to this phone? We had originally posted on the specs of the Atlas some time ago. Here they are again:

  • Curve with faster EDGE for data - evolved EDGE
  • Radio Quad Band GSM/GPRS/EDGE with DLDC and LatRed support for Evolved EDGE
  • Downlink data speed 473kbps (with 8 timeslots)
  • Display 480x360 LCD
  • Camera3.2 MP Auto Focus, Flash
  • Micro USB high speed, Bluetooth 2.1
  • Optical Navigation Module
  • Functional Hard Keys Volume
  • User Configurable Key
  • Speaker Phone
  • Media Keys/Mute
  • Lock - A*
  • Software BB 5.0

By Bla1ze | 29 Jul 2010 12:47 | 230 comments
BlackBerry App World 2.0 launched in BlackBerry Beta Zone!

As we've known for a while now, BlackBerry App World 2.0 was set to arrive eventually. Today as it turns out, happens to be just that day. BlackBerry Beta Zone participants have been sent out invites to the all new BlackBerry App World 2.0 release and can now sign up for the download if you are indeed eligible.

Lots of new features have been built into version 2.0 as well, the layout of how things are displayed has also changed for users. We've outlined a lot of the changes previously in our "What's coming in BlackBerry App World 2.0" so that is certainly worth a look over. We'll get a better review up here in a bit for you all but, right now it seems as though the downloads have slowed Research In Motions servers to a crawl. Stay tuned folks. If you managed to get it downloaded, please feel free to leave your comments on what you think about it. Full press release now available after the jump.

RIM Announces BlackBerry App World Updates

New BlackBerry App World Features to be Available for Beta Testing in the United States and Canada This Week

WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 29, 2010) - Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today announced updates to BlackBerry App World(TM), the official application store for BlackBerry(R) smartphones. BlackBerry App World provides BlackBerry smartphone customers with an intuitive, integrated service for discovering, downloading, recommending and managing mobile applications for personal or business use. BlackBerry App World now supports new payment options, includes enhanced discovery and search features, and introduces a new user identification system called BlackBerry(R) ID.

New Payment Options

BlackBerry App World will support new payment options in addition to PayPal. Customers will be able to purchase applications using major credit cards, including Visa and MasterCard, in various countries around the world. RIM is also working on integrated billing with various carriers to enable BlackBerry App World purchases to be applied directly to the customer's monthly bill from those carriers.(i)

Easier Application Discovery

BlackBerry App World adds new tabbed sections for various lists of applications. Users can horizontally swipe or scroll to quickly view the Top 25 Free Apps, Top 25 Paid Apps and Top 25 Themes, as well as lists of Newest Apps and Recently Updated Apps.

QR barcode scanning is also supported, allowing users to scan a QR code associated with an application from anywhere - the web, print ads, brochures, etc. BlackBerry App World will quickly find the related application and automatically open the application's information and download page.

BlackBerry ID

BlackBerry ID provides customers with a device-independent user identification (ID) used with BlackBerry App World. It enables new payment options, including credit cards and integrated carrier billing(i), and allows customers to seamlessly transfer their personal library of free and purchased apps when they switch to a new BlackBerry smartphone.

"BlackBerry App World continues to grow with a rich catalog of personal and business oriented applications that further enhance the BlackBerry smartphone experience," said Alan Brenner, Senior Vice President, BlackBerry Platform at Research In Motion. "The new features in BlackBerry App World make it even easier for customers to find, purchase and maintain applications for their BlackBerry smartphone."

Nearly 30 million BlackBerry smartphone users have downloaded BlackBerry App World and an average of over one million applications are being downloaded each day. Available in more than 65 countries, BlackBerry App World allows users to discover, download, recommend and manage the applications that help them get the most out of life while on the go.

The newest version of BlackBerry App World is available for beta preview to customers in the United States and Canada from BlackBerry(R) Beta Zone (www.blackberry.com/beta).

(i)Availability of integrated billing with specific carriers to be announced at later dates. Requires a carrier post-paid service plan.

RIM soon to be getting developers ready for BlackBerry 6

RIM soon to be getting developers ready for BlackBerry 6

Some cool happenings over at the BlackBerry Developers Blog. Today, they posted some good news for developers as well. In the next little while, that BlackBerry Developers Blog will be compiling a bunch of new BlackBerry 6 information and posting it for everyone. Oddly though, the post makes no mention of when exactly the tools needed for BlackBerry 6 will be available but we're guessing a complete roll out is to be expected near or at the BlackBerry Developers Conference.

For our Java developers, we’ll work to highlight the new APIs being introduced, including a new powerful set of new User Interface controls, Universal Search integration, and a Barcode Capture API. For our web developers, we’ll start to redefine BlackBerry® Widgets and talk about the completely revamped BlackBerry Browser powered by a Webkit engine. We will cover HTML5, CSS3, and concrete steps for how you can bring your mobile site to BlackBerry® smartphones.

Looks like Research In Motion will be covering a lot to ensure developers have the support that is ever so vital these days. Creating Super Apps has become part of RIM's full on development process and if people aren't sure of how to do that, then stuff like this being laid out for them is great.

BlackBerry 'BlackPad' Tablet to Release in November?

?

New credible reports are coming out that the BlackBerry tablet will be releasing in November. The name 'BlackPad' is said to be its final production title. While there have been many rumors regarding the specs on the tablet a few of them have supposedly been confirmed.

The BlackPad is said to be releasing with a 9.7-inch screen, 1Ghz processor, front and back facing cameras for video conferencing, WiFi, and bluetooth technology that will allow users to connect their BlackBerry devices to the BlackPad for utilizing the internet.

“They can’t wait for a second generation of devices from Apple or they’ll fall too far behind,” said Ashok Kumar, an analyst with Rodman & Renshaw Inc. in New York. This is one of the reasons why we should see the BlackPad released in November instead of early 2011.

There is a rumored price-tag of $499.

If everything comes to fruition it sounds as though RIM could bring a tablet to the market that may compete very well with the Apple iPad. If all of the specs are true and price is right, will you buy a BlackPad?

BlackBerry Bold 9780: A Quick Overview with New Video and Images

?

It was some what recent that we had heard rumors there was going to be a 9700 refresh dubbed 'Onyx Delta'. Then the BlackBerry 9780 kind of came out of no where in a UAProf Doc and later the worlds first image. As it is customary with most outed devices, once the leak begins to drip it just keeps pouring.

*We've put together a video comparing it to the 9700 and showing a bit of the new features. You can skip to this as it is at the very bottom. However, we had technical issues and could not get any audio to go along.*

It is very interesting to see that OS 6 only takes up about 180MB of the 512MB RAM. This is a lot less than the 9800 Slider's OS 6 version. This is most likely due to the touchscreen requiring a lot more memory. Given that the trackpad OS 6 version doesn't require as much memory, perhaps we will see it on almost all other trackpad devices? It has been rumored that OS 6 would release to the 9700 and 9100, but it would not go on the 9300 (lower grade processor). If we do see OS 6 release on the 9700 and 9100, we'd bet carriers won't release it until sometime in 2011.

Not much has changed aesthetically for the 9780 from the 9700. The only difference is the 9780 now sports a gun metal bezel, whereas the 9700 had a regular chrome bezel. Which do you like better?

Here are the current specs we know:

  • 624Mhz Processor
  • 512MB Flash RAM
  • OS 6.0.0.125 (possible launch build)
  • 480x360 Resolution Screen TFT, 65K colors
  • 5.0 MP Camera with LED Flash
  • Trackpad
  • GSM / UMA / HSPA+?
  • Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP
  • Wi-Fi b/g (possibly N?)
  • Gun Metal Bezel

We apologize that there is no audio.

Are you impressed with the 9780? If you currently have a 9700, will you upgrade to the 9780 so you can have OS 6 right away?

Bold 9780 Hands-on Review

We jumped on the bandwagon two days ago with more pictures of the upcoming Blackberry Bold 9780. Well we're back today with exclusive video of the 9780 running OS6! We've seen plenty of videos of the 9800 running OS6, but to date there has been no video of a QWERTY device running the OS (except for the very early review of the 9670 we did!). More importantly, we haven't seen Webkit on a QWERTY device.

No more! Below, find a short video of the 9780 running OS6 and some more pictures.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raUlCJIqPZc" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raUlCJIqPZc</a>

As you can see, everything seems to run quite nice! Take note of times the screen seems to be white and "loading". This was not lag, rather just the camera getting adjusted to the light. As mentioned in the video, it is important to note that this is a pre-release device and definitely not running the final software version. In fact, based on the picture below, this device is running App Version 6.0.0.79.

Some quick observations of this device:
-The 9780 has the exact same form factor and appears to be the same all around hardware of it's older brother, the 9700.
-The camera does not have the "5MP" stamp next to it that the 9670 has.
-Same screen resolution as the 9700.
-Appears ready to run on GSM networks (read: AT&T and T-Mobile in the US).
-Cannot tell if the processor is the same as the 9700, but runs smoother on OS6.
-Tough to tell from the pictures because of glare, but has a sharp black bezel around ...

Research In Motion Purchases BlackPad.com!

2

Wow! This makes for a very, very interesting day. RIM has in fact purchased the domain name BlackPad.com! When we told you first that there was going to be a BlackBerry tablet we were told it was called the 'BlackPad'.

RIM Still Working on a BlackBerry with a Landscape Slide-out Keyboard?

RIM Still Working on a BlackBerry with a Landscape Slide-out Keyboard?

?

One of our connects had told us some time ago that when the (now BlackBerry 9800) was being developed there were two versions of the keyboard; portrait and landscape. We obviously know that the portrait version won for final production. However, we were told that RIM is still working on a BlackBerry with a landscape keyboard.

There hasn't been any credible evidence to support this claim until now. Our connect directed us to this patent, which shows what could be a touchscreen device with a slide out keyboard. What is even more interesting about the patent is that the device is compared to that of the Samsung Alias 2.

As you can see from the images, you can slide the main screen up or left/right to show select keys. It is a very interesting design and the patent notes that a device with compact and expanded configurations could be very useful in a multimedia device.

It will be interesting to see what or even if anything does come to fruition. The final product doesn't always look inline with its original patent design. Nevertheless, do you think there is a BlackBerry with a landscape keyboard in the near future? Would you prefer a landscape keyboard over the traditional portrait?

Inside BlackBerry 6: Home Screen Evolution

Inside BlackBerry 6: Home Screen Evolution

As you may have already seen in the sneak peek video, the Home Screen in BlackBerry® 6 has undergone a makeover. To get the inside scoop on some of these changes, I reached out to Joey Benedek, Director of UX Research at Research In Motion® (RIM). Check out the interview below.

First, can you tell us a bit about what you and your group do at RIM?

I am a Director in the User Experience (UX) group, and I run the UX Research team. The UX organization is responsible for understanding user needs and desires and translating those into interface designs. We then work with the various software development teams to iterate those designs – with end-user feedback as our guide – prior to releasing to market. Bottom line, our team is responsible for defining the on-device experience that our customers interact with and making sure those experiences are not only usable but also desirable.

If there was one thing you want our readers to know about the Home Screen redesign, what would it be?

I’d say that the redesign of the Home Screen in BlackBerry 6 is fresh, but familiar. When you look at it, it still looks like a BlackBerry Home Screen (for example, wallpaper selection continues to be a key attribute of the visual design), but it’s been updated – much like a home renovation still ‘feels’ like home, but is actually new.

With BlackBerry 6, we are introducing a host of new features in the design, evolving the look and feel and enabling the user to really customize the Home Screen. Overall, the visuals are cleaner and sleeker, and movement between and within the applications is more fluid, allowing users to navigate their BlackBerry smartphone in a much more intuitive and interactive way.

What is the biggest change in the Home Screen design?

In BlackBerry 6, there are now five separate views that a user can easily switch between using the Navigation Bar, depending on their preference and the type of information they’re looking for. These include: “Frequent”, where your most frequently-used apps are automatically placed for easy access; “Favorites”, where you can choose to add not just your favorite applications, but also to create shortcuts to particular Contacts or web pages (making the important people and information in your life just one click away!); “Media”, for all your media-centric content; “Downloads”, for all the apps you download; and “All” – this is the big vertical list that you can scroll through, similar to the Home Screen today. Users will be able to simply slide left and right (the touch-screen or trackpad, depending on your BlackBerry smartphone model) to quickly get to any of these new view panes.

Can you give us an overview of some of the other important BlackBerry 6 design updates?

In trying to deliver an optimized experience for how people use their BlackBerry smartphone – and how they search for information on it – we are introducing two new ‘quick access areas’ that are built into the Home Screen.

One is designed to allow you to have quick access to the Connections, Alarm and Options screens – things that we found people frequently want to adjust or change – with one click from the Home Screen. With BlackBerry 6, this will be done by simply selecting/tapping the top of the Home Screen. A drop-down panel then appears that allows you to change these on the spot.

The other quick access area on the Home Screen is designed to enable you to view your most recent messages (such as email, text, BlackBerry® Messenger), phone calls, upcoming appointments, Facebook® and Twitter® notifications simply by tapping the Notification Bar in the middle of the top of the Home Screen. If you click on the Notification Bar, it drops down to show who the notifications are from, along with the first few words from the title. This feature makes it much easier to prioritize which notifications you want to respond to first.

The BlackBerry Home Screen also now includes a powerful Universal Search application. It’s never been easier to find content on your BlackBerry smartphone, regardless of whether you’re looking for contacts, messages, music, pictures or appointments. Universal Search was designed to be tightly integrated with your BlackBerry smartphone: simply tap on the Search icon in the top right-hand corner of the Home Screen – or just start typing – and it searches the whole device. As you type, we instantly bring back your results using icons.

Maybe even more exciting is that the same search query can also be used to search the web as well. If you search your device and can’t find what you’re looking for, you can simply tap other available icons, such as YouTube®, Google or BlackBerry App World™, to extend your search further.

How did your team come up with the design and layout for the BlackBerry 6 Home Screen?

The Home Screen is really one of the most used areas of the BlackBerry smartphone, so we spent a lot of time researching how people access data and where they naturally would look for things. The research included focus groups, usability testing, gathering feedback from forums, customer feedback and much more.

For example, we found that users were overwhelmed by all the icons and details on the initial Home Screen, so we implemented the five views and swiping pane for easier viewing. We also found that it wasn’t always intuitive where to find newly downloaded applications, so we created the Downloads view on the Home Screen. Another great example was Universal Search – the team had users keep diaries of any searches they did in any domain over a few weeks, which helped us learn behavioral patterns, what order people want content coming back to them, and so on. This had a big influence on how the Universal Search application was designed.

If you had to pick your favorite new aspect of the Home Screen, what would it be?

It would have to be either the new Notification Dropdown (it’s great for multitasking) or swiping between application panes (I like watching the animation — it’s fun!).

RIM's BlackBerry Curve 9300 spotted in T-Mobile branding (update)

It's certainly not the first time we've seen this here BlackBerry (with "this here" meaning "Curve 9300"), but it's the first time we've seen it outfitted in carrier clothing. Notice that T-Mobile logo at the bottom? That's the clearest indication yet that this particular 'Berry will soon be headed to T-Mob, but given that it's unlikely to support an upgrade to BlackBerry OS 6, your off-the-chart excitement level may indeed be unwarranted. At any rate, we're also hearing that Rogers in Canada will be snagging this at launch, but we'll be passing along official details just as soon as we get them.

Update: As it turns out, this actually isn't the first time we've seen a magenta-scarved Curve 9300, just the one that has us most convinced it's got a date with destiny. Not to mention stateside availability.

Official via Bell

Not even 2 days after the 5.0.0.822 leak for the 8520, Bell Mobility Inc. decides to show the 8530 users some love! We're not 100% sure what this update includes, since I have the 5.0.0.822 OS installed and haven't noticed much difference, I'm assuming there isn't much of a difference in 5.0.0.782 either; However there's always that chance! User's let us know what you think of it after the install.
