BlackBerry Bold 9780
BlackBerry 9780 6.0 OS, 512MB
OS 6.0.0.140
Since the announcement of the BlackBerry Torch 9800 with BlackBerry 6, we've all been waiting to see how older devices such as the BlackBerry Bold 9700 were going to fair with it running. As it turns out, it looks to be in great shape judging from the above video. With a noted boot time of about 1 minute and overall snappy response from the device, BlackBerry 6 on the BlackBerry Bold 9700 looks like it will be worth the wait. Also noted was the fact it appears to be a full implementation of BlackBerry 6 as well. Not a "watered down" release as previously rumored. WebKit browser, universal search and more are all found on the device. What do you all think now that we get a chance to see it running? Looking good or would ya rather a Torch still?

Looking to get some more details on the BlackBerry Bold 9780? BoyGenius has just unleashed a bevy of training slides from Research In Motion which show off the specs and even how the company views the device from a marketing standpoint. Not much really new, that we didn't already know in the documents when it comes to specifications but the insight as to how RIM views the device is rather interesting to see.
Personally, I love my BlackBerry Bold 9700 and really am excited to see the minor changes that will be arriving when the BlackBerry Bold 9780 launches. Although, that 624mHz Marvell processor feels like it should have gotten a bump. How do you all feel about the 9780? Is it enough to make you want to purchase one or would you have liked to see more changed?
"Mid to late October is where it's supposed to get exciting, with a possible launch of the RIM BlackBerry Storm 3 9570. Interestingly, our source mentioned that the Storm 3 will run BB OS 6, but will still feature a Sure Press touchscreen. That would be strange, given the Torch has made the move to the far more proven capacitive tech. The other surprise for BlackBerry fans will be the new Curve 3 9330."There has been a lot of speculation on whether the Storm3 will just be an "Odin Refresh" or if it will truly be a new device all together. Either way it will be interesting to see what the next Storm series device will be like.

Rebooting a BlackBerry - something we hate doing yet something we (unfortunately) need to do. Battery pulls, "soft reset" or whatever you want to call it, it has to be done. Historically our devices have taken nothing short of an eternity to reboot, pushing toward 10 minutes in some instances just to get up and running. Well with the new BlackBerry Torch 9800 a welcome relief comes as the improved boot time which is roughly 2 minutes. Finally we don't have to fret pulling the battery - which is few and far between on this device as it is.
Check out the video above (I didn't edit it down at all so we get the full effect of how painful a reboot is - it's kind of long and boring in the middle so feel free to skip ahead) for a head to head comparision of the Bold 9700 (OS 5.0.0.586), Bold 9650 (OS 5.0.0.732) and Torch 9800 (OS 6.0.0.141). Each of them is loaded up with nearly the same apps and data (messages, contacts, calendar etc) to make things as close as possible. The video is kind of long as I left it run through the whole boot process, so you can skip ahead if you want to just see the meat of it. The Torch boots up in around 2m 20s (at 3:17 in the video), the Bold 9650 takes a not-so-close second at 6m 40s (at 7:40 in the video) with the Bold 9700 bringing up the rear with a boot time of 9m 15s (at 10:33 in the video). Now keep in mind this isn't exact, but its a pretty good show of how long each device takes to boot up. This will totally vary depending on your data, apps etc as each device is specific to its owner, but we tried our best to do a decent comparison. Regardless it is totally obvious here that the Torch with BB6 is way faster (RIM did tell Kevin they improved the boot time considerably) than older devices. Your mission for today is to do your own boot test and drop a comment with your device/OS/boot time. Lets see who has the best and who has the worst!
No surprise here considering Rogers in Canada already announced the new BlackBerry Curve last week, but this morning it became official on a Research In Motion level. Like the Pearl 3G, the new BlackBerry Curve will be known as the BlackBerry Curve 3G. It's the next generation of the 8500 series, which basically remains the same entry level device as the 85xxx, but now has 3G. Also, while the device is shipping with BlackBerry OS 5.0 to start, it is labeled at 6 ready. That's a nice suprise that I wasn't totally expecting. So it looks like you'll be able to stick with 5 or upgrade to BlackBerry 6 on the Curve 3G as you see fit. We've seen the Curve 85xx series be extremely successful in the marketplace, and this one looks like a nice little followup that should do big sales for RIM. Stay tuned for more details - we'll have a full BlackBerry Curve 3G review up soon.
